There is no single “best” safari month for everyone. Dry-season visibility, migration movement, green-season landscapes, price and crowd levels all change through the year.
January to March
The southern Serengeti and Ndutu area can be especially rewarding as migratory herds use the short-grass plains. This is a strong period for travellers interested in calving-season behaviour, while Tarangire is greener and more dispersed than in the late dry season.
April and May
These are wetter months in many northern areas. Landscapes are lush, visitor numbers are lower and some seasonal camps close or reduce operations. Road conditions and rainfall should be considered when planning longer overland routes.
June to October
The long dry season usually brings excellent general game viewing, especially around permanent water. Tarangire becomes particularly strong for elephants and other wildlife concentrating near the river. In the Serengeti, migration movement shifts northward over the season.
November and December
Short rains refresh the plains and wildlife distribution begins changing again. This can be a good shoulder season for travellers who want green scenery without the heavier rains of April and May.
Choose by priority
If migration is your main goal, plan around the ecosystem sector where herds are more likely to be — not around a promise of one exact crossing date. If your goal is broad wildlife, a well-routed northern circuit can work in many months.
How to choose a month for your priorities
Start with the experience that matters most. Travellers focused on river crossings need a different date range from travellers who want calving, lower visitor numbers, green landscapes or a first safari with straightforward road conditions. A month can be excellent for one park and only average for another, so the route should follow the season rather than forcing every destination into every itinerary.
What changes between northern parks
Serengeti planning is strongly influenced by migration movement, while Tarangire changes as wildlife concentrates around permanent water in the drier part of the year. Ngorongoro can be visited throughout the year, although highland weather can be cooler and cloudier. Lake Manyara is often used as a shorter contrasting stop for forest, escarpment scenery and birdlife.
Booking strategy
For peak travel periods, secure well-positioned camps and lodges before building unnecessary extras around them. In quieter months there is often more flexibility, which can be useful for photographers, repeat safari travellers and guests who prefer a less crowded atmosphere.
