Zanzibar areas feel very different. Choosing the right base can improve a beach extension more than adding another excursion.
Stone Town
Best for history, food, markets and architecture. One or two nights is often enough before moving to the coast.
Nungwi and Kendwa
The north is popular for swimming, sunsets, restaurants and a more active resort atmosphere. It suits travellers who want convenience and evening options.
Paje
Paje is known for its long beach, kitesurfing scene and social cafés. Tides strongly shape the appearance of the coast through the day.
Jambiani
Jambiani has a more village-oriented feel and can be quieter than central Paje while still offering access to southeast-coast activities.
Split stays
A Stone Town plus beach combination often works better than moving between several beach hotels. Keep transfer days to a minimum.
Do not choose the whole island from one photo
Zanzibar’s coasts have different tides, activity levels and hotel styles. A beach that looks perfect at high tide can feel very different several hours later. Match the area to swimming, watersports, nightlife, quiet time or easy access to excursions.
Split stays can work
One or two Stone Town nights followed by a coast stay gives cultural context without sacrificing beach time. Longer island holidays can also split north and east coast areas, but short stays are usually better with fewer hotel changes.
Airport and ferry logistics
Transfer time matters on departure day, especially from more distant beaches. Confirm the pickup window around international flight check-in rather than assuming island distances are short.
