The Great Migration is a continuous ecosystem movement, not a fixed event that happens on the same date every year. Rainfall and grazing conditions influence where herds concentrate.
Southern plains
During the greener months, large numbers of wildebeest often use the Ndutu and southern Serengeti short-grass plains. This period is associated with calving and strong predator activity.
Western movement
As conditions dry, herds generally begin moving through central and western areas. Routes can spread widely, so accommodation should be positioned with realistic daily driving distances in mind.
Northern Serengeti
Later in the dry season, many herds reach the northern Serengeti and Mara River region. River crossings are dramatic but unpredictable; no operator can schedule a crossing for a specific hour or day.
Return south
After seasonal rains begin, movement gradually turns back through the ecosystem toward the southern plains.
Planning well
Choose the Serengeti sector first, then choose camp location. A migration safari is stronger when it gives multiple days in the relevant zone instead of attempting a single rushed visit.
Why exact dates never guarantee a crossing
River crossings depend on herd position, local rain and the animals’ own movement. Even during a strong crossing period, a vehicle may wait for hours or see herds turn away from the river. A good migration itinerary gives enough time in the correct region instead of selling one dramatic moment as guaranteed.
Central Serengeti still matters
Migration planning should not make the rest of the ecosystem invisible. Central Serengeti supports resident wildlife throughout the year and can add excellent predator viewing, especially when moving herds are between major seasonal zones.
Build flexibility into the itinerary
Use camps positioned for the likely seasonal movement and allow multiple game-drive opportunities. For photographers and repeat visitors, a private vehicle is especially valuable because it lets the guide wait at promising areas instead of following a fixed group schedule.
