Safari packing is mostly about comfort in a vehicle, sun protection and managing cool mornings, heat and dust without carrying unnecessary luggage.
Clothing
Choose lightweight neutral clothing that can be layered. A fleece or light insulated layer is useful before sunrise and on the Ngorongoro highlands, even when daytime temperatures are warm.
Useful safari items
Bring binoculars if you have them, sunglasses, sunscreen, a brimmed hat, refillable water bottle, charging cable and a small day bag that stays with you in the vehicle.
Photography
Longer lenses are useful but not mandatory. A beanbag or window support can be more practical than a full tripod inside a safari vehicle. Protect electronics from dust.
Domestic flights
Bush flights can have stricter luggage limits and may prefer soft-sided bags. Confirm the specific airline allowance before packing if your itinerary includes a fly-in sector.
What to leave behind
Large hard suitcases, excessive formal clothing and valuables you do not need can stay in hotel storage when possible.
Pack for the vehicle, not a fashion shoot
Most safari days involve sitting, standing through a pop-up roof, short walks around lodges and repeated changes between cool mornings and warmer afternoons. Comfortable layers matter more than bringing a different outfit for every day. Neutral colours are practical because they hide dust and are easy to mix.
Camera and electronics
Bring spare batteries, charging cables and enough memory cards for long wildlife days. A beanbag can be useful for serious photography, but many travellers are well served by a camera with a moderate telephoto lens or good binoculars. Protect electronics from dust when roads are dry.
Small items that make a difference
Lip balm, hand sanitiser, a lightweight scarf, insect repellent, a small torch and a soft bag for domestic flights are easy to overlook. Keep medication and essential documents in hand luggage rather than checked baggage.
