4-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut
Meet the park ranger and mountain team at Momella Gate, complete registration and begin through grassland and forest on Mount Meru’s lower slopes. Wildlife such as giraffe, buffalo or monkeys may be seen at a distance. Continue to Miriakamba Hut for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Miriakamba to Saddle Hut
Climb steeply through montane forest and giant heather toward Saddle Hut. The trail gains height quickly and opens to views into Meru’s crater. After lunch and rest, a guided acclimatisation walk toward Little Meru may be added depending on the itinerary and weather.
Day 3: Little Meru acclimatisation and rest
Use the higher hut as an acclimatisation base and climb toward Little Meru for additional altitude exposure and broad views over Arusha National Park. Return to Saddle Hut, eat early and prepare clothing and lights for the summit attempt.
Day 4: Summit Socialist Peak and descend to Momella Gate
Start before dawn and climb toward Rhino Point before following the crater rim to Socialist Peak. The ridge is exposed in places and the ranger controls movement according to wind and trail conditions. After the summit, descend via Saddle and Miriakamba toward Momella Gate.
