8-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa
After registration at Londorossi Gate, continue to the Lemosho trailhead and walk through montane forest to Mti Mkubwa. The first stage is deliberately moderate, giving the team time to settle into a sustainable pace while porters move ahead to prepare camp.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1
After registration at Londorossi Gate, continue to the Lemosho trailhead and walk through montane forest to Mti Mkubwa. The first stage is deliberately moderate, giving the team time to settle into a sustainable pace while porters move ahead to prepare camp.
Day 3: Shira 1 to Shira 2
Cross the broad Shira Plateau toward Shira 2, gaining altitude gradually through high moorland. The walking is steady rather than technical, with time for rest, hydration and a slower afternoon at camp to support acclimatisation.
Day 4: Shira 2 to Barranco via Lava Tower
Climb higher toward Lava Tower, using the day as an important acclimatisation stage before descending toward Barranco. This “climb high, sleep lower” profile exposes the body to higher altitude while allowing recovery at a lower camp. Your guide monitors symptoms closely throughout the day.
Day 5: Barranco to Karanga
Start with the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical scramble where guides manage spacing and hand placement. Continue across a series of valleys toward Karanga Camp. The distance is not extreme, but the terrain makes this a useful acclimatisation and movement day.
Day 6: Karanga to Barafu
Climb from Karanga toward Barafu through increasingly dry alpine terrain. Reach camp early enough to eat, organise summit clothing and rest before the night ascent. Your guide gives a final summit briefing and checks headlamps, water systems and layering.
Day 7: Barafu to summit area and Crater Camp
Climb into the summit zone and continue to Crater Camp near the high volcanic crater. Sleeping at this extreme altitude is significantly more demanding than a standard Kilimanjaro summit itinerary and is only suitable for well-acclimatised climbers whose guide considers conditions appropriate.
Day 8: Crater Camp to Uhuru Peak then descend to Mweka Gate
Wake inside the summit zone, climb to Uhuru Peak and then begin the long descent off the mountain. The early summit access can be quieter, but the total descent is substantial, so the team manages breaks carefully before reaching the lower route and road transfer.
