Trip Highlights

6-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Register at Marangu Gate and begin on a well-formed trail through rainforest to Mandara Hut. The route uses mountain huts rather than tents, and the first day gives time to settle into the guide’s pace before higher-altitude stages.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Climb out of the rainforest and into open moorland, with views toward Mawenzi and Kibo when cloud permits. Reach Horombo Hut in the afternoon and focus on eating, drinking and resting well at the higher sleeping altitude.

Day 3: Horombo acclimatisation day

Stay a second night at Horombo and use the day for an acclimatisation walk toward the Mawenzi area before returning lower to sleep. The purpose is controlled altitude exposure without the pressure of moving camp.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Cross the high alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo, moving steadily toward Kibo Hut. The landscape becomes sparse and exposed. Arrive with enough time to eat, prepare summit gear and rest before the night ascent.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak then Horombo Hut

Start the summit climb from Kibo Hut during the night, ascending the steep volcanic slope toward Gilman’s Point and continuing around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak if conditions and health allow. Descend to Kibo, then continue much lower to Horombo for rest.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Descend from Horombo through moorland and forest to Marangu Gate. Complete the park exit formalities and certificate process before the road transfer back to Moshi.
