7 Days Lemosho Route: A Scenic Trekking Adventure on Kilimanjaro

Kiligates Expeditions

The 7-day Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic and less-crowded routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a remarkable journey through diverse ecosystems. Starting on the western side of the mountain, this route provides a gradual ascent that maximizes acclimatization opportunities, making it one of the best options for trekkers aiming to reach Uhuru Peak successfully.

This route begins in the lush rainforests of Lemosho Glades, where you might spot wildlife such as colobus monkeys and exotic bird species. As you ascend, the terrain transitions to heath and moorland, offering stunning views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau. The Lemosho Route also includes a trek through the iconic Lava Tower for acclimatization and crosses the Barranco Wall, a thrilling section with panoramic vistas.

The 7-day itinerary is tailored for trekkers seeking a balanced approach, combining challenging sections with ample time for rest and acclimatization. This route is ideal for those who enjoy solitude, breathtaking scenery, and a higher summit success rate due to its thoughtful pacing.

Day 1: Lemosho Gate to Big Tree Camp

  • Elevation: 2,100m (6,890 ft) to 2,780m (9,120 ft)
  • Distance: 7 km (4.3 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

Your adventure begins with a drive to Lemosho Gate, where you’ll complete registration. The trek starts through dense rainforest, with a chance to encounter wildlife. Arrive at Big Tree Camp in the late afternoon for your first overnight stop.

Day 2: Big Tree Camp to Shira 1 Camp

  • Elevation: 2,780m (9,120 ft) to 3,500m (11,485 ft)
  • Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

Hike through the forest before transitioning to the moorland zone. You’ll enjoy stunning views of the Shira Ridge as you approach Shira 1 Camp. The open terrain and cooler temperatures mark a shift in the mountain’s ecosystem.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

  • Elevation: 3,500m (11,485 ft) to 3,840m (12,598 ft)
  • Distance: 7 km (4.3 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Today’s trek is a relatively short and gradual climb across the Shira Plateau, a stunning volcanic landscape offering breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers. After reaching Shira 2 Camp, spend the afternoon acclimatizing and relaxing.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp (via Lava Tower)

  • Elevation: 3,840m (12,598 ft) to 3,950m (12,959 ft)
  • Distance: 10 km (6 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 6–8 hours

This is a critical acclimatization day as you ascend to the Lava Tower (4,630m/15,190 ft). Spend some time at the high altitude before descending to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” approach enhances your body’s ability to adapt to the thinner air.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

  • Elevation: 3,950m (12,959 ft) to 4,035m (13,238 ft)
  • Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Begin your day by tackling the Barranco Wall, a steep but manageable ascent with breathtaking views of the valley below. Continue through rolling terrain to reach Karanga Camp, an ideal spot for resting and acclimatizing.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

  • Elevation: 4,035m (13,238 ft) to 4,600m (15,091 ft)
  • Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Trek through the alpine desert toward Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit attempt. After an early dinner, prepare your gear and rest, as the summit push begins around midnight.

Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

  • Elevation: 4,600m (15,091 ft) to 5,895m (19,341 ft) (descent to 3,100m/10,170 ft)
  • Distance: 17 km (10.5 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 10–14 hours

Start your summit climb in the dark, navigating the steep and challenging terrain to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement and taking photos, descend to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.
